Halibut Cove Lodge
Halibut Cove Lodge blends the best of
two worlds. We satisfy your appetite for outdoor
adventure and also your taste for sophisticated service
- all in a striking natural environment.
Spend the day exploring the vast
grandeur of the Alaskan wilderness. Spend the night
unwinding in the intimate atmosphere of our lodge.
Halibut
Cove Lodge is located on the pristine shores of Halibut
Cove in beautiful Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Kachemak Bay
sits at the south end of the Kenai Peninsula, and is
only 240 miles south of Anchorage. The small town of
Homer is the gateway to Kachemak Bay and the Kachemak
Bay State Park, Alaska’s oldest state park. Homer
boasts a new municipal airport terminal with multiple
daily connections to Anchorage. The Seward Highway also
connects the small seaside hamlet to Anchorage and many
small communities in between.
Only seven miles across the bay from
Homer, Halibut Cove Lodge is ideally located as a
remote, yet accessible wilderness retreat reached by
boat or floatplane.
Creating Halibut Cove Lodge has been a
true labor of love for us. The lodge was built upon the
love for the Alaskan wilderness experience. It is a
privilege to share this beautiful piece of the Alaska
wilderness with others. And we’re confident that you
and your clients will love it, too.

Safety and Comfort

adventures. All of Halibut Cove Lodge’s adventure

are some variables we cannot control, but can
certainly mitigate.

Weather
This one’s up to Mother Nature, however, here’s
generally what to expect.
The weather pattern in Kachemak Bay during our
season (May - September) is dynamic and predictably
unpredictable. “If you don’t like the
weather, wait an hour, it will change.”
Temperatures during our season range from the
mid 50’s to mid 70’s. You can expect a little
rain, a little sun, a little fog and a little wind -
sometimes all in the same day. The days are long in
the summer, peaking at close to 20 hours of daylight
at the Summer Solstice. To deal with the weather
changes, we recommend practicing the Art of Layering
your clothing. Sunscreen is a must.

Fishing
Halibut
Cove Lodge is more than just a great fishing resort.
We provide a variety of fishing options for
novices, as well as for experienced anglers.
Our location allows easy access to the best
saltwater and freshwater fishing that Alaska has to
offer.
Known
as the Halibut fishing capital of the world,
saltwater anglers come to see how they stack up
against trophy-sized barn door halibut.
A
less well-known fact is the fantastic Salmon
fishing, which is quickly gaining a reputation to
rival that of the Halibut fishing.
Two King salmon runs (one, mid-May to
mid-June; the second, late June to mid-July) make
for a terrific summer season.
Also, Halibut Cove Lagoon, less than a half
mile from the lodge, is home to an enhanced,
terminal run of first run Kings.
The
acrobatic Silver Salmon start to show about the
first week of August and run into the first week of
September with Red Salmon, Pinks and Chum sandwiched
in between. Huge
Ling Cod and a variety of Rockfish can also be
targeted for a complete saltwater angling
experience.
Also
offered are a variety of river, stream and lake
fishing, with hard fighting Steelhead, Rainbow
Trout, Grayling and Dolly Varden available
seasonally.

Kayaking
Sea kayak the protected waters of Halibut Cove
and the surrounding bays, lagoons and fjords sharing
the water with a wide variety of shorebirds,
seabirds and marine mammals (sea otters, porpoise,
seals and the occasional whale).
Or, you can kayak among the chunks of glacier ice in
a glacier lake and be awed by the spectacular views
of the glacier cascading into the lake. Eagles often
soar overhead.
For the most adventurous folks, ride down the
glacier river of Class III rapids as it leads you
back to the bay.

BackCountry
Kachemak Bay State Park is Alaska’s
playground, with close to 400,000 acres of
wilderness. This vast expanse offers superb hiking,
biking and skiing. Luckily for Halibut Cove Lodge,
this is our backyard!
In the spring, strap on the boards and take
advantage of the skiing opportunities on great
spring “corn” snow.
During the summer, the many well-groomed hiking
trails provide outdoor adventures ranging from the
recreational level to the more difficult.
Breathtaking views of Kachemak Bay, glaciers, lakes
and volcanoes lining the horizon will make your
sweat well worth it.
For those with a keen interest in flora and fauna,
many of the hikes take you through a myriad of
ecosystems, from near-coastal tidal areas, through
alpine and tundra, and along glacier valleys.
Mountain biking is a popular way to cover a lot of
terrain and get the heart pumping while
simultaneously enjoying the stunning vistas. We
offer a number of biking options for all ability
levels.

Sight Seeing
Helicopter
and floatplane trips are a great way to access the
backcountry, whether it be to sightsee, to
walk on a glacier, or be dropped off for a remote
fishing, hiking, or skiing experience.
From shorebirds to brown bear, sea otters to whales,
wildlife viewing opportunities abound at Halibut
Cove Lodge. In early May, we welcome the annual
migration of over 100,000 shorebirds passing through
the region. Guided birding tours provide excellent
viewing opportunities. We also offer whale watching
and general wildlife tours, and often times our
fishing trips are topped off with a timely Orca
whale show or a humpback breaching.
Fly-out trips for brown bear viewing are an
experience you must not miss. You can’t imagine
the thrill of coming face-to-face with these
magnificent creatures in their own environment.
Witness bears as they fish along riverbeds flush
with salmon, frolic on ice patches and slumber in
the tundra.

Leisure
We are surrounded by wilderness and are
insulated from the day-to-day hustle of urban life.
Our nearest neighbors are the otters and porpoise in
our front yard, the eagles nesting in our trees, and
the bears, moose, and mountain goats in our
backyard.
While the modern distractions are few (no TV, cell
phone, or internet connection available), the
amenities are plenty. A session in the sauna, a
relaxing evening in the hot tub, and the glorious
views from the guest cabins while curled up with a
good book make it easy to get away from it all.
Those who desire a dash of activity can be pampered
by a garden spa or take a tour of Halibut Cove’s
boardwalk art galleries.
