ALASKA Activities
Like No Place on Earth
Our adventure cruising style allows you to stay aboard the smaller Skagit Orcas and do any of the following activities during the day, then meet up with The Lost Coast Explorer in a new destination each night. The route that The Lost Coast Explorer travels is truly spectacular, allowing you opportunities to view different kinds of wildlife, 500' waterfalls, and 4,000' peaks that shoot straight up out of the ocean.
One of the most exciting aspects of cruising aboard The Lost Coast Explorer is the daily whale watching. Humpbacks, Killer Whales, Wright Whales, and Fin Back Whales can all be viewed in our area. Our experienced crew will tell you what type of whale pod you are watching and are capable of placing you close enough to the whale to look it in the eye.
Adventure Sea Kayaking
On the Petersburg/Sitka leg of our cruise we will be spending one day and night at the hot springs on the east side of Baranof Island. These hot springs are just the right temperature in which to soak, so be sure to bring your swimming suit.
We carry two double sea kayaks and two single kayaks that are available to you for evening paddles in a secluded bay, or daily paddle adventures next to the glaciers or near the whales. We can load two kayaks in each of the 24' Skagit Orcas to take you where you want to go.
Cave Tours
We can arrange for a tour for your party to experience some of the region's larger cave systems. Tours are provided by the forest service. There are also many small and hidden caves along our journey.
Bird Viewing
There are spectacular bird viewing opportunities throughout our cruise, but one of the must see side tours for bird enthusiasts is the puffin nesting area on Coronation Island.
Backcountry Hiking
At any time during your tour with us we can accompany you into the backcountry for a hike into pristine wilderness. Whether you would like to take a short stroll to view the flora and fauna, or you have found a remote peak that beckons your company - we encourage you to make the most of the opportunity.
Beach Combing
Along the many sandy beaches of Southeast Alaska you will find numerous types of logs, shells, sea animals, and artifacts from old native settlements and abandoned cannery sites. On remote shores, you may even find the occasional glass ball used by Japanese commercial fishermen. You can also dig for butter clams, razor clams, and geoducks. These clams are considered a delicacy and can be used in soups or as appetizers on the boat.
Cannery Tours
During our tour we will pass many historical sites and locations of interest - among these are abandoned canneries. Your guide has extensive knowledge of these canneries, and available tours will provide you with a view into the past. One of the best cannery sites in Southeast Alaska is Steamboat Bay on the west side of Prince of Wales Island. We spend the first night of this leg of the tour in the bay next to the cannery. This cannery should not be missed. The site has over 100,000 square feet of cannery buildings, as well as one of the last complete fish traps from the 1930's in existence today.
Sea Lion Rookery and Seal Family Viewing
At any time during your stay you can take one of the 24' boats to view the Sea Lion rookery or to view seals at play.
Glacier Tours and Viewing
In the town of Petersburg there is a glacier that we can pull the 24' boats right up next to for some incredible picture opportunities. We can also drop guests off for a stroll on the glacier.
River Running in the 18' Jet Sled
There are numerous rivers along our route. At any time you may grab a guide and explore these remote rivers with our 18' jet sled.
Bear Photography
In Southeast Alaska we have brown bears and black bears. These bears can often be viewed feeding on salmon as they migrate up rivers. With the use of the jet sled we can safely get you close to the bears as they feed, with fantastic opportunities for photography.
Guided Ocean Fishing Tours
At any time during your stay you can go ocean fishing on available full- or half-day excursions. Ocean fishing guides will accompany you in an enclosed cabin sport fishing boat in search of halibut, bottom fish, and salmon. All of the necessary equipment is provided for you. Just say, "Lets go bag some kings!"
Guided River Fishing Tours
If you are a fly fisherman and would like to experience the thrill of one salmon after another, or you just want to throw a spinner, Southeast Alaska is for you. Let the stream fishing guides show you exactly how and where to throw a fly in these remote streams. If you don't have a lot of experience, just ask your guide for casting instructions - all of our guides are instructors.
Shrimping and Crabbing
All you have to do is say the word and our excursion guides will take you out to throw shrimp pots and crab pots. In Southeast Alaska we have spotted prawns and dungeness crabs.
Panama Activities
White Sand Beaches and Crystal Blue Waters
Hannibal Bank harbors one of the largest populations of Blue Marlin and Black Marlin in Central America. After an exciting day on the water, we encourage you to take a stroll on the many islands white sand beaches, or take our kayaks out in search of bottlenose dolphins and flying fish. The islands in this area boast on of the richest varieties of bird life in the world. Take a guided tour through the jungle on Coiba Island in search of leaf cutter ants, exotic insects, and the occasional sloth. You may even see howling monkeys or hear their call during the end of the day. Whatever activities you choose, your experience in Panama will be one you will not forget.
Cruising
Cruising in and out of the islands that separate the open ocean from inside waters on the west side of Panama is truly something spectacular. This is a place with white sand beaches and clear blue water, where fishermen still paddle out in hand carved canoes to their fishing grounds. This area is protected by the Coiba National Park and the Cerra Hoya National Park. Both parks are a refuge to birds, a variety of animals, reptiles, native flora and fauna, reef, and, of course, fish. Immerse yourself in the tropical experience and take a step back in time. This is the Lost Coast.
Surfing
During our voyage aboard The Lost Coast Explorer, we will be traveling through a series of islands that all offer exceptional surfing. We have 27 surf spots that we visit regularly, and there are still many locations that are being explored. You can combine surfing with other activities in one day. The opportunity to combine different activities is what Lost Coast Excursions is all about - the next activity is just a short boat ride away. For inexperienced surfers, we do offer surf lessons and can provide long boards at any time during your stay.
Diving
For those of you who wish to do some diving, you can schedule diving every day or you can combine diving with other activities. We do have a compressor on board, and tanks for up to 6 divers at a time. Our staff includes experienced open water divers. Experience the thrill of diving in water with 100' visibility. Grab some oysters. Maybe you will get a chance to dive with the whale sharks that frequent this area.
Snorkeling
Jump off the dock at any time while The Lost Coast Explorer is anchored up for some great snorkeling. If you enjoy free diving and wish to do a little spear fishing, we have that equipment available for you. Grab a couple lobsters before dinner!
Jungle Tours
In the Coiba National Park there is a spectacular jungle tour that is available to you at any time. You can do a half hour tour or do a full day hike through Coiba Island. Coiba Island has a multitude of indigenous species of plant life, animal life, reptiles, and bird life that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. The Smithsonian has a research center in the park that allows them to study these unique species.
Ocean Fishing
Want to pull on a 300 pound yellow fin tuna? Or how about casting a fly for roosterfish in the shallows from a flats boat? Fishing is available every day of your stay. We suggest taking advantage of the 3,000 foot drop off called the Hannibal Bank that is famous for some of the best blue and black marlin fishing in the world. Looking for a billfish grand slam? This is the place.
Estuary and River Fishing
With the use of a jet sled we can travel up rivers and fish estuaries with ease, so that you can cast flies or lures for all types of inshore species. Snook, roosterfish, snapper, and bonito are all a blast on light tackle.
Whale Watching
While traveling aboard The Lost Coast Explorer, you will have the opportunity to see many whales of different types.
Beach Tours
Any of the white sand beaches you see can be yours! We will pass hundreds of beaches while traveling down the coast during a 6-day tour. Any of these beaches are accessible with the use of our 18' jet sled. Simply say the word, and we will drop you off to explore or just relax in the sun.
Local Village Tours
We will pass by several small fishing communities that have no road access. Entering these small settlements is like stepping back in time. Witness groups of men hand carve their fishing canoes from whole logs. See people fish from the bank of a river with bamboo poles or casting line. Life in these villages revolves around the catch of the day.
Bird Viewing
These areas have a unique variety of bird life that can be viewed from the ocean or on jungle tours. Panama has over 10 birds that are endemic to Panama. Take advantage of your opportunity to see the rare coiba spinetail, which is not found anywhere else in the world.
