Orca
Take In the Sights Too
Picture of the Month (Spy Hopping Orca)
Scientific Name: Orcinus Orca. These northern resident killer whales seem to be checking out their surroundings by spyhopping. It is believed that their sight is as good above the water as it is underwater. Orca Whales are the largest member of the dolphin family and this day proved that they can be as playful as their relatives. Male Orca can growg to 30 feet in length and usually weigh about 10,000 pounds. Females grow to about 26 feet and may weigh over 7,000 pounds. Orcas can swim at 30 miles per hour and can travel over 100 miles in 24 hours. They can easily dive to more than 600 feet, and can stay underwater up to 25 minutes. Adults may eat 200 pounds of fish and
squid per day. Orcas are found in all oceans of the world. Orca sightings
are always thrilling and your chances of seeing pods of Orcas on an
Alaskan small ship cruise are excellent, creating a memory that will last
a lifetime.
